Emergency Care

Emergency Care at Alleghany Health

The Emergency Department (ED) at Alleghany Health is here for your emergency medical needs 24/7/365. Our board-certified physicians and skilled nursing staff provide a comprehensive assessment of your illness or injury while determining the level of care and treatment that you need.

We routinely handle broken bones, acute injuries from falls or accidents, heart attacks, chest pains, and strokes. As a designated stroke center, local EMS can transport patients with stroke-related symptoms directly to Alleghany Health ED where our staff is trained to assess and administer thrombolytics, “clot buster” drugs, within the allowable time frame as designated by the NC Office of Emergency Medicine Services.

In certain critical conditions where a higher level of care is required, our staff works closely with Wake Forest Baptist Health or Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin to coordinate transportation via ambulance or helicopter.
Upon arrival at the ED, patients register, and a triage nurse will evaluate your condition before being seen by a doctor. Please try and have a list of your medications if possible.

Every patient is important to us, and we strive to provide the most advanced, compassionate care in the shortest time possible. Please understand, however, that your wait will depend on the urgency of your emergency and the number of other patients waiting for care.

Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology

Many life-threatening diseases like cancer and gastrointestinal bleeding share similar symptoms to less serious and more common digestive disorders such as acid reflux, colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or pancreatitis. If you are experiencing weight loss, abdominal pain, fatigue, blood in the stool, vomiting or GI bleeding, you should contact your regular physician immediately for a complete examination. Your physician will then determine if you are in need of a colonoscopy, or in need of an endoscopy to determine the cause of your digestive disorder. Our team can assess, diagnose and treat a full range of digestive disorders of the stomach, esophagus, intestines, liver and pancreas with the aim of restoring good digestive health. If a more extensive procedure or surgery is required at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, your doctor and staff will guide you through the process and will be with you every step of the way. Endoscopies and colonoscopies at Alleghany Health are available monthly by referral only.

Imaging

Imaging Services at Alleghany Health

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department offers a full range of services to help medical providers quickly assess your medical needs and begin treatment promptly. With state-of-the-art equipment, board-certified radiologists, and highly qualified technologists, Alleghany Health can provide many of the same diagnostic radiology services found in a large medical center.

Ultrasound Services

An ultrasound is a tool that uses sound waves to create pictures of structures within the body, including organs and fetuses. Moving images can be viewed on a video screen, while still images can be captured for later viewing. Our ultrasound services are performed by registered sonographers and include abdominal and pelvic, vascular, and cardiac ultrasounds.

CT Scans

A CT scan, or CAT scan, allows the doctor to see inside your body for a better view of your organs, bones, or blood vessels. The CT scanner gathers a series of images of the body from different angles. This non-invasive exam provides anatomical information quickly and accurately, which assists your physician in making accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations. At Alleghany Health, our CT scanner utilizes 16-slice per second scanning.

Digital Mammography

With digital mammography, the radiologist can capture and manipulate the images so abnormalities can be easily seen. Screening mammograms are performed by a registered mammography technologist. Our mammography program is fully accredited by the ACR and the FDA.

Bone Density (DEXA) Scans

A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis — a disorder characterized by bones that are more fragile and more likely to break. A bone density test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The bones that are most commonly tested are in the spine, hip and sometimes the forearm. Doctors use bone density testing to:

  • Identify decreases in bone density before you break a bone
  • Determine your risk of broken bones (fractures)
  • Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Monitor osteoporosis treatment

X-Rays

A basic diagnostic tool, x-rays are beams that create pictures of bones and hard structures in the body. The most familiar use of x-rays is checking for broken bones, but x-rays are also used in other ways. For example, chest x-rays can spot pneumonia. Mammograms use x-rays to look for breast cancer. Radiation safety is top priority at our facility and lead shielding is available when you have an x-ray.

Nuclear Stress Test

A nuclear stress test is used to diagnose coronary artery disease and to guide treatment of heart disorders. This test helps your physician assess your risk of a heart attack or other cardiac event if your doctor knows or suspects that you have coronary artery disease.

A nuclear stress test uses radioactive dye and an imaging machine to create pictures showing the blood flow to your heart. The test usually involves injecting radioactive dye, then taking two sets of images of your heart — one while you’re at rest and another after exertion.

Nuclear stress testing is offered once a month at Alleghany Health on the last Friday of every month.

For those patients who require admission, Alleghany Health offers inpatient services to those in our community. Our inpatient nurses are highly skilled and eager to provide exceptional nursing care to all patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric. These nurses are focused on providing up-to-date, high-quality care to those who trust us with their healthcare needs, while they strive to promote wellness and healing in collaboration with our physicians and interdisciplinary team members while maintaining a patient-centered approach to care.

One patient noted that Alleghany Health’s inpatient nurses “demonstrated a level of compassion that we’ve not seen in the medical profession and we were overwhelmed with the entire staff’s performance and true kindness.”

Lab & Pathology

When your healthcare provider needs answers, we can help with timely and accurate testing services that are required to diagnose and treat individuals in acute and chronic situations. In addition to serving patients at Alleghany Health, our lab serves nursing homes and community healthcare agencies. Most laboratory tests are performed in-house with rapid turnaround time. Lab services are available 24 hours-a-day, including weekends and holidays.

The Alleghany Health “Lab Express” program allows patients direct access to laboratory testing for more control over their health and without a physician’s order. No appointment is necessary.
